While Northern Virginia is ramping up for our first snow of the year and most are dreaming of a white Christmas, I’m over here changing all the Christmas lyrics to match my shopping list: a white sectional.
I want a white sectional for Christmas,
only a white sectional will do.
Although, perhaps you prefer:
I’m dreaming of a white sectional,
Just like the one on Pinterest too.
Where the arms are sloped and cushions covered
To keep the color bright and true.
I know, I know “WHITE SECTIONAL?!” I can hear you all screaming. Albeit a risky choice light colors, in particular white, is my color of preference. In addition to color, I have a few requirements that are likely to cause me to either compromise or pay 1 bajillion dollars for exactly what I want.
Nevertheless, let’s review the wish list of features, shall we?
Sectional must haves:
- Light or a neutral color. Obviously, this is non-negotiable because it brings me joy! Overall my family room as plenty of natural light and tall ceilings making it feel open and airy. Light colors help contribute to that feeling significantly.
- Slipcovers! With 2 young boys (4 and 5), slipcovers are a must. Even though I’ve banned most food and drinks from the family room, grubby fingers and dirty toes still inevitably find their way onto the couch. Subsequently, slipcovers make it easy to throw them in the wash and maybe even bleach them.
I’d prefer:
- Stain-resistant fabric. This one is pretty self-explanatory.
- Down filling over polyfill. I’ve had an IKEA Ektorp sofa for the past 6 years, and it’s managed the abuse of boys and dogs really well still the cushions have looked a little defeated. Subsequently, it can be very challenge to reshape the cushions to look crisp and tidy. Therefore, it’s time to graduate to “adult” furniture with a little higher quality and luxurious feel. Man, I’m realizing just how much those little boys are driving the requirements.
- Straight or sloped arm over rolled arm. Even though I love the look of a good rolled arm, I’m ready for a change. See previous comment about luxurious feel.
I’d love if i can find:
- Linen look fabric. The casual and comfortable feeling of a linen type material is the vibe I’m going for in the family room. I prefer light linen over the twill I have now. And while I know microfiber and performance fabrics are durable, they’ve never really suited my personal style.
- Bench cushions. The fewer cracks and crevices, the less likely I will have to fish toys, remotes, or contraband snacks from between the cushions. Bench cushions also mean little boy climbing is less likely to scoot, scoot, scoot the couch cushions out, leaving the couch looking sloppy and unkempt.
- Budget-friendly: Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, and Serena & Lilly have sectionals that meet most of the criteria but spending more on a sofa than I did on my first car makes my bellyache.
Now the process of overthinking can truly begin. What requirements am I missing? Is it worth the money or should I just upgrade from Ikea to Ikea?
Let’s keep things real….here’s what my Living room normally looks like these days:
